BANGKOK, NOVEMBER 26, 2015 – BSA | The Software Alliance today announced that it has awarded the ISO 19770-1 Software Asset Management (SAM) standard aligned Verafirm Certified certification to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The SEC is the first public agency in the ASEAN region to earn the Verafirm Certified status.

In addition, BSA announced that it has awarded the ISO 19770-1 Software Asset Management (SAM) standard aligned Verafirm Certified certification to Thai Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. The company is the first private sector organization in Thailand to achieve the prestigious Verafirm Certified status.

This certification recognizes both the SEC and Thai Yamaha Motor for implementing a model software asset management (SAM) practice that includes creating sound SAM policies, implementing effective processes, managing software procurement, software inventory management, deployment, retirement and usage monitoring. The certification controls spending and mitigates legal risks of software copyright violations.

The long term benefits of software asset management (SAM) include improved IT procurement cost control, increased efficiency of IT systems, and reduced legal, financial, reputational and data security risks. Verafirm provides a platform for companies to benchmark their implementation of software asset management (SAM) based on the ISO 19770-1:2012 standard.

“Today is a great day for Software Asset Management or SAM) and Verafirm Certified certification in Thailand,” said Mr. Roland Chan, Senior Director, Compliance Programs, APAC, BSA | The Software Alliance. “The SEC has truly established best-in-class global software asset management (SAM) practices.

Thai Yamaha Motor has lived up to its reputation for innovation and quality, and has become a hero manufacturer. Through these achievements both SEC and Thai Yamaha Motor enhanced cyber security, improved corporate governance and reduced IT spend. This is good for the Thai business community and good for international investors in Thailand.”

BSA is encouraging businesses and public sector organizations around the world to adopt international standards aligned SAM practices to ward off the dangers of cybercrime, improve governance, maximize IT budget efficiency and reduce legal liability.

“Security is a mission critical for the SEC,” said Mrs. Nataya Niyamanusorn, Assistant Secretary-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission, Thailand (SEC). “That SEC has cleared the benchmarks of international standards for software asset management (SAM) is evidence of the implementation of internal control to mitigate potential risks related to software and IT. This is to promote the role of SEC that is the regulator and developer of Thai capital market for efficiency and sustainability.”

Nearing its 25th anniversary, the Securities and Exchange Commission is an independent public agency under the Securities and Exchange Act B.E. 2535 (1992) with the duty to supervise and develop the Thai capital market to ensure efficiency, fairness, transparency and integrity.

For a company committed to innovation and international standard processes, the decision to undertake SAM and Verafirm Certification was natural according to Thai Yamaha Motors CEO Mr. Tetsuya Inamura.

“We are delighted to receive the 2015 Award for SAM Excellence and proud of our employees’ cooperation and contribution to this Award,” said Mr. Inamura.

In seeking Verafirm Certified status, both SEC and Thai Yamaha Motors cite security enhancements, greater productivity and compliance as motivation for embracing SAM. Both organizations have already recognized cost savings and enhanced governance within the IT department.
